Weekend Getaways
Barcelona
Barcelona, one of the best locations in the world to savor the Mediterranean
air, a city located on the northeast coast of the Iberian Peninsula, won the
prestigious 1999 RIBA Royal Gold Medal for its architecture. This is notably
the first, and as of 2006, it is the only time the winner of this award has
been an entire city and not just an architect. In fact, it is also one of the
top 10 European countries to visit, hailed just this year by a Travel
Magazine
Indeed, how could the second largest city in Spain and the capital city of
Catalonia be missed out when it comes to these awards? The early 20th century
architecture of Catalan was developed here between 1885 and 1950 and left an
important legacy in the city. A great part of these creations are World
Heritage Sites. Among these are remarkable works of the famous architect
Antoni Gaudí, the best known of which is the immense but still unfinished
temple of the Sagrada Família. The construction of this started in year 1882
and is billed for completion in 2026. Another architect was Lluís Domènech i
Montaner, who designed the Palau de la Música Catalana. Barcelona also houses
a great number of museums such as The City History Museum that used to be a
royal residence. There are also the works of Joan Miró in the museum of the
Fundació Joan Miró. This is also the city home to the Picasso Museum which
features early works by Pablo Picasso.
